When Barrymore is caught, he cannot furnish an excuse they will believe. Finally, Mrs. Barrymore tells them that the signal on the mooor comes from her brother, an escaped convict.  They have been trying to furnish him food and other necessities while trying to keep him from being recaptured.  Ultimately Watson and Holmes go to look for him but become distracted with the sound of a wolf.
