Watson doesn't indulge is an overly detailed description of Holmes. What we do learn, is that Watson has great respect for the man and his accomplishments. We also learn that Watson was proud that he "had so far mastered his system as to apply it in a way which earned his approval." Thus, Watson sees Holmes as an intelligent man, whom he can learn from. The men share mutual repsect and admiration
