The House of the Seven Gables
Hawthorne reflected a Nineteenth century writing style that we might now consider "overblown" or too detailed. Printing technology was not advanced enough to utilize pictures so authors like Hawthorne often compensated with lengthy visual description. Hawthorne had a very romantic stylistic bent to his writing, symbolism and metaphor were devices heavily used. It is difficult to generalize about styles of today's writers. I think we can say the symbolisms and metaphors are not as obvious as in Hawthorne's time nor is there the necessity for lengthy visual descriptions dominating the text.
