explain the following quote: "many, many years i have waited for it! it is late! it is late! i want my happiness."

Although the garden party has cheered him up, the sunset brings gloom to Clifford once again. This quote gives us Clifford's desperation to find some sense of happiness, some sense of himself. The narrator, however, states that Clifford will not find it other than the fleeting moments of a garden party.
