what show of defiance does matthew display when he goes to the puncheon mansion

His defiance is apparent in the way he turns the tables in order to control the situation with Pyncheon. He never allows him to get the upper hand and sets the conditions himself. I believe he shows a huge amount of defiance when he takes advantage of Alice.
