why do the townspeople think that the colonel should build his home on another piece of land

The townspeople never come right out and say it, but they have an inkling that the Colonel has falsely accused Maule of witchcraft. Thus, they believe that he should build his home on another piece of land because "he is about to build his house over an unquiet grave."
