Why did Henrietta and up being raised by grandfather?

After her mother died in childbirth in 1924, her father moved with his ten children to Clover, Virginia. Knowing he could not afford to raisw ten children, he divided them among relatives to be raised. Henrietta was raised by her grandfather, who was also looking after another grandchild.
