Why did the lacks children think they were getting blood drawn? What were actually getting tested for

Chapter 23 " it's alive" I just want to know why they want to test they blood. Did they have the cancer from they mom or was they deases that has been pass on the family

The children were told that drawing blood was for cancer tests to see if the children had cancer. Researchers were actually trying to untangle the HeLa contamination problem. They hoped that they could identify HeLa in cultures by mapping her genes.
