Why is the classical allusion in which Wilde compares lady bra knell to the gorgon particularly apt ?

 Lady Bracknell represents Victorian morality and ethic. She, like a gorgon, is overbearing and unforgiving. She demands that Jack find a decent family and her judgments over marriage prospects are definite. 

lady bracknell apart from being a symbol of moral and ethic during the Victorian era, she also carried the symbol of one being a mother who would do anything for her child. The most common thing a mother would do to provide for the wellness of their child is through material gains. Eventhough she carries the character of one being a respectful person, she seems to care less about how moral can become really subjective. She act through the guideline of morality the society expect and she, being a mother and a respectful person couldn't care less about how people view her in this case, being describe by Jack as a 'gorgon' and how she had lose herself in the middle of the society.
