Why is the play called The Importance of Being Earnest?

The title, The Importance of Being Earnest, is a double entendre, in which, Wilde is referring to both the name Ernest and the quality of earnestness. In context, Ernest does not exist anymore that the quality of seriousness and sincerity exists in Victorian society.
