Chapter II, Why does Equiano include the 1st paragraph? Is this important?

I think that this paragraph gives us context to where the slaves came from. They had identities and culture before they were forced into indentured servitude. Equino details how his idyllic life in Eboe was cut short by his kidnapping and subsequent enslavement.
