Equiano's narrative sounds European because the former slave was transported to England at the age of twelve where he was educated in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Although he wasn't able to save enough money to pay for his freedom until he was around twenty years old, Equiano's life afforded him numerous experiences and extended travel. His narrative reflects his education and the place he called home.
