why does he reject slavery ?

It was not long before they reached the island of Montserrat on February 13th, 1763, and Equiano chose to reject his fate: "My former slavery now rose in dreadful review to my mind, and displayed nothing but misery, stripes, and chains; and, in the first paroxysms of my grief, I called upon God's thunder, and his avenging power, to direct the stroke of death in me..." Equiano's arguments seem to be more against cruelty than slavery itself. He finds that abuse of slaves is both morally and economically unsound.
