why is Equiano's petition to Queen Charlotte so politically significant?

In 1788 Equiano wrote a letter to Queen Charlotte, married to King George III, and asked for black freedom from slavery. I can clearly understand the importance of this to an extent but I cant find any ones views on this so cant expand.

It was most significant to the Queen herself because Equiano could read and write. Few blacks were literate, and Equiano's literacy and well written petition impressed her. She listened.....
