Irony is defined as: a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result.

In context, irony can be found in a continuing feud between two families, in which, each of the characters (Georg and Ulrich) view the other as an interloper. In the end, however, the two men are helpless to defend themselves against the wolves.... who inherently see both men as interlopers on their land.
