How was he nearly discovered by the shopkeeper?

The shopkeeper had keen hearing.... in the end he locked Griffin in a room, though he was unsure about what was actually going on and had no idea that Griffin was in the room he locked. When the shopkeeper came back and unlocked the door, Griffin took the opportunity to hit him over the head.
