I believe that Sinclair accomplished both. He hit the public's stomach by revealing exactly how their meat was processed and readied for sale. He hit their heart by exposing the plight of the people who labored within the industry and enlightening the public to what could only be defined as their abuse. The focus on working conditions definitely inspired sympathy.
