How is Jurgis's former life in Lithuania juxtaposed with his current life at the end of Chapter 20?

At the end of chapter 20, the only thing I can find is Jurgis being glad he has a job and walking a long distance to work in order to save money. We can infer his situation is still better than what it was like in Lithuania.
