Sinclair uses realism in the form of a wedding feast to introduce his characters. By doing this he creates not only sympathy for the novel's main characters because we immediately begin to relate to them.

Sinclair uses realism in the form of a wedding feast to introduce his characters. By doing this he creates not only sympathy for the novel's main characters because we immediately begin to relate to them, but also gives a us a glimpse at the traditions they've brought to America. In addition, he unveils some new attitudes and overtly depicts the assimilation that has already begun to take place.
