Sinclair’s implicit idea in the first two sentences of this selection is that there is something fishy going on with the workers in the stockyard. In those two sentences, he spoke about the gossip and the crimes being committed. These sentences reflect his purpose in writing this story because they demonstrate that something criminal was going on in the stockyards. The second sentence definitely helps to prove his purpose.
