Jurgis originally bought into the American dream of working really hard ands getting ahead. Unfortunately Jurgis discovered that the American Dream for immigrants like him meant working really hard only to be used by the factory owners again and again. Jurgis initially dismissed the unions as not needed but later on works feverishly recruiting Lithuanians immigrants to join the union. Jurgis finds that he needs to work harder at keeping his human rights than at his job.
