The Jungle
What was the factory work pay.
What was the pay for the children? What was the pay for the adults?
What was the pay for the children? What was the pay for the adults?
Children under the age of sixteen were barred from working, but parents had false papers made because familes needed the money. The following quote supplies information about how much the children made. I believe this was the pay scale for everyone..... taking into consideration children weren't allowed to work, but I'll see if I can find something else for you.
"And, for this, at the end of the week, he will carry home three dollars to his family, being his pay at the rate of five cents per hour-just about his proper share of the million and three quarters of children who are now engaged in earning their livings in the United States."

The Jungle/ Chapter 6
Chapter 11
The packinghouses hire more men during the summer months, but they pay each one less. This is so that if some of the men go on strike, the others will be trained to take their places. Thus, Jurgis has more work but brings home less pay. For the women, their wages decrease by a third, and there are rumors that they will be cut further. Marija is indignant over this slight in pay, and she organizes some of the other women to walk away from their jobs. They strike outside, waving a red flag (the symbol for “oppressed workers”), but the strike breaks in three days because there are so many people without jobs.
