When Ona doesn't come home one night she tells Jurgis that the weather made it impossible for her to travel, and that she stayed at her friend Jadvyga Marcinkus' house. He accepts this answer the first time, but the next time she neglects to return home, Jurgis goes out looking for her and doesn't find her with her friend but rather on a street car.

Ona and Elzbieta lie to Jurgis again, but when he confronts Ona alone, she admits that Connor has forced her into prostitution by Connor who has threatened to eliminate all the family’s jobs if she doesn't go along with him.
