what is the conflict

A woman exits a charity hospital with her newborn son in her arms. The man believed to be the child's father is an artist. He is shown her picture The picture falls into the fireplace and he picks it up, but then throws it back into the flames to burn. The woman decides that she is going to give up her son and abandons him. She spies an expensive car parked nearby, and leaves him on the back seat, along with a note asking that the owner of the car cares for and loves the baby. Unfortunately, before the owner of the car can return to his vehicle, it is stolen, complete with abandoned baby.

When the car thieves discover the child in the car they are shocked and leave him on the side of the street, where he is found by The Tramp (Chaplin).
