Sacrifice is a reoccurring motif in this book. I think Amir has been sacrificing for Baba all his life. He was a boy trying to live up to standards that were not in his identity. Amir had to care for Baba in America but he refused to let Baba's biases choose the rest of his life. Amir wanted to be a writer and was no longer willing to live up to his father's expectations about what a man should do for an occupation.
