Amir carries his guilt for failing to help Hassan when he was raped by Assef. When Amir's father Baba prevents a soldier from raping a woman, Amir tells his father to sit down but Baba replies, "Haven't I taught you anything" ? Amir feels intense shame for his failure to stand up for what is right, even at the expense of getting hurt himself.
