The novel begins with the flashback. What is the memory?

In the very first chapter, Amir flashes back to the past.... to a specific day, in a specific place, where he would see an event that he'd never forget and always regret..... the rape of his best friend. This flashback provides us with a look at Amir's past. It illuminates the man he has become, and the past he can never get away from.
