Amir is out of touch with Afghanistan. He is truly very much a tourist in his own country. He gives the boys his watch only to realize later that it was his food they were looking at. I think the author is trying to point out how Amir has much to learn about the realities of his home country. There is also a sense that Amir never really understood Afghanistan when he was living there.
