What made Amir stop laughing and think that maybe Afghanistan was a hopeless place?

Amir stopped laughing when Farid questioned the reason that Amir would come to save a Hazzara boy...... the fact he could ask led Amir to believe that Afghanistan was truly a hopeless place.
