Why did Hassan allow Assef to rape him without really much of a fight?

Really there wasn't much Hassan could do. He was a Hazara and fighting Assef would be of little help to him. I really think he was also trying to help Amir. This was the sad tragedy of the whole thing. This is why the moment would haunt Amir for the rest of his life.
