Why does Ellen run away? What happens to the baby? Could this tragedy have been avoided? Why or why not?

Ellen can no longer stand living on a desolate piece of farm land where the weather is frequently dry and harsh. She runs away with her baby. The baby dies. I suppose, if the husband communicated better, things might have been different.
