Why did Randy think it was important to pour soda on the back seat of his car

In his book, he thought it would be a good idea to intentionally pour pop (soda) on the back seat of his car. Why?

Randy wanted to point out to his niece and nephew that people are more important than things. When his sister began lecturing her kids about not messing up uncle's new car, he poured soda all over the cloth seats to show that he didn't care if it got messy.
