What does ichabod determine will happen on his way home

I don't know where you are in the story, but Ichabod often fears that mysterious things will appear on his ride home. 

From the text:

"...and how often was he thrown into complete dismay by some rushing blast,
howling among the trees, in the idea that it was the Galloping Hessian on
one of his nightly scourings!"
