Why was Ichabod convinced that he would win Katerina's heart?

Ichabod comes to Katrina’s house repeatedly under the guise of his role as her singing teacher, and he woos her under her parents’ not very watchful eyes. He feels his station in life and "charming" intelligent banter will help him secure Katrina.
