How could "The story is an attack on small-town America" be applied to this story?

The lottery portrays small town America as rather mindless and dependant on conformity for its own sake. There is a macabre aspect to the tacit acceptance of this "tradition" although the actual killing is the only part of the tradition that is kept fully intact. There is also an implicit hypocrisy about the perceived "friendliness" of the villagers. The women also have distinctly subordinate position in the economy and social hierarchy of the town.
