how does the author use mystery, suspense, and tension in the story

i know that there is a mystery by who is going to get the paper with the black dot on it but cant find the tension and suspense

The tension is evident in the reactions of the townspeople as family names are chosen..... and the absence of the black dot becomes a signal for relief. Suspense is present throughout the story, notably because we don't know what we're waiting to find out. It's a mystery until the end.
