How does the character Davy Hutchison explore the theme in the story the lottery
Davy is a pretty minor character in the story can comment on the larger theme of tradition within this story, which Davy is a part of. On the surface the purpose of the lottery was to choose which "lucky" villager would have the "honor" of being ritualistically murdered. We find, through Old Man Warner, that the Lottery might once have been a sacrifice for better crops. Most of the historical traditions and beliefs around the Lottery had been dropped. The villagers still took part in it as a matter of mindless ritual and a morbid sense of entertainment. They maintain only the "traditions", like the stoning, that exploit the violence. Little Davy is given pebbles to throw at his own mother. This is his morbid initiation into the practice of the lottery.
