Tessie represents the irony of most people in the town. Tess is the last to arrive to the lottery, claiming that she had forgotten the date. She chats briefly to Mrs. Delacroix, before making her way to stand with her family. When her husband picks the marked slip of paper, Tess accuses Mr. Summers of being unfair. Similarly, when she herself picks the marked paper, she protests the ritual instead of accepting her fate.
