As the reader becomes more aware of what the "lottery" truly stands for, they become more and more disturbed. The way in which we define lottery today is far different than it was at the time the story is set.
Our perceptions change as th tradition is explained, but it is only when we see Tess' reaction to the lottery that the change overwhelms us.
