Davy did not want to throw stones at his mother. The irony here is very strong. The others fully expect Davy to stone his mother to death, "The children had stones already, and someone gave little Davy Hutchinson a few pebbles." Little Davy still had his natural innocence. He had not yet become conditioned by society to derive satisfaction from killing someone, especially his own mother.
