what does it me when the writer said ''he measured his life with coffee spons''

I believe this refers to the fact that he doesn't do anything out of the ordinary; he never jumps at an opportunity or does anything unexpected. He lives his life in small doses, similar to the daily thoughtless use of coffee spoons...... the things we all do without thought.
