Susie remembers the summer nights when she listened to Mr. O’Dwyer. Sometimes, she would smell a thunderstorm coming. She’d change into a cotton nightgown and go out onto the back porch. Her mother would stand and watch, telling her she’d catch cold, but then telling her she looked invincible. Susie would agree. There is of course the irony here in the last words. Susie would prove not to be invincible. She was fragile in the face of violent people outside her control.
