The Marrow Thieves
Chapter 16
What happens to people in the schools?
What happens to people in the schools?
On the fourth day, Miig summons French to walk beside him. He describes escaping from the facility. He met people and bartered for information and supplies, including a gun. He eventually made it back to the school and intended to rush in, gun blazing. He realized the folly of that plan. Instead, he stopped a truck leaving the facility. The driver said everyone in the facility had been “used up.” He found the truck contained vials of a liquid, each carefully labeled with an identification number and a description of a Native American, such as “23-year-old make, Odawa-Miqmaq” or “64-year-old female, Metis” (Location 1785). Miig killed the driver, though he knew it was not that man's fault. He then drove the truck to a secluded lake and “sang each one of them home when I poured them out” (Location 1799). Miig finishes the story by saying that people sometimes take actions they would normally eschew. He says that, in the current situation, the only thing that is important is that a person has good intentions.
