The Marrow Thieves

question

The Council man sent to investigate the burning down or explosion of School #47E noticed that the Indigenous Peoples who had been camping outside the school, essentially performed a smudge: “The campers made their hands into shallow cups and pulled the air over their heads and faces, making prayers out of ashes and smoke” (174). What was its purpose?
