What are some parallels between the book and the real world?

The book draws parallels between a fictional dystopian future and the true horrors of the Canadian residential school system, a legacy of Canada's colonialism which significantly harmed the Indigenous children forcibly sent there as well as the trauma that lingers today. There is also the environmental collapse in the book that is also a major issue today.
