What does Frenchie learn about surviving on his own before he meets Miigwans group?

Frenchie learns that he must do what he needs to in order to survive. He travels carefully, drinks from rain barrels (that make him sick), eats dandelion weeds, and ponders how he will hunt without a weapon, as he heads north. He also thought about his mother's talk about having goals.
