This is only a short answer space but I can give you a general response. French is a young boy when society collapses and Native Americans are persecuted for their ability to dream. He is 16 when the main story line of this novel takes place. He has a grasp of what is happening in the world. He holds on to the hope of a future in which he will no longer have to be a nomad, constantly running from government officials. He is idealistic in some ways, though he is able to face the world realistically. He is devoted to the family group led by Miig, and he kills one of the men he holds responsible for RiRi's death. After Minerva is captured, French feels that their group lacks purpose, and he leads the effort to rescue her. French is captivated by Rose as soon as they meet, and his first thought is that he hopes they are not related, which means he wants to have a relationship with her.
While French is still young, he is already showing leadership qualities, and he knows that Miig is helping him develop those. French is somewhat naive, however, and misses many of the signs that Wab and Chi-Boy are a couple. He longs for a stronger connection with his heritage, but he fails to take advantage of Minerva's wisdom to learn. French's real name is Francis, but no one uses this name regularly other than his father. For the sake of clarity, he is referred to as French throughout this guide.
