Why doesn’t Isaac understand the reality of the situation?

Miig was extremely scared of the people in the vans especially when he recalls negative past experiences. Miig wants to run away from them. Isaac is calm and wants to reason with them. I don't think that Isaac understands the gravity of the situation and wants to see the best in people.
