Discuss to what extent did Farefrae led to Hechard's downfall?

Farfrae wasn't as much responsible for Henchard's downfall, as he was a character with whom Henchard could not compete. Farfrae's actions are not malicious, he even respects Henchard, but Henchard will not allow himself to respect Farfrae in return. He is jealous of the young man's capabilities and his youth... he is also jealous of Elizabeth's feelings for the young man.
