The Mayor of Casterbridge
To what extent did Farefrae led to Hechard's downfall
To what extent did Farefrae lead to Henchard's downfall.
To a greater extent, it is clear that Farfrae partly wasn't responsible for Henchard's downfall. Henchard's and jealousy led to his downfall. Instead of him to celebrate that her friend had become successful, he is filled with envy. If he had killed jealous in his heart maybe he could have continued to prosper. He failed to realize that Farfrae was younger than him, hence he could not compete. It is his impulsiveness that made him made huge losses as he was too ambitious to out bit Farfrae. Henchard also is considerate and hardly asks for other people's ideas which made him fall. When they held a fundraising entertainments he did consider that it could rain and also used old methods of entertaining people but Farfrae was rather intelligent and used science in all he did. He is portrayed as a man who always does a send thought before doing anything, he considered that thy was a possibility of rain and this made people like him. Henchard should have shown to be happy about Farfrae's intelligence and cooperate joining their ideas, in that way Henchard could succeed. Henchard also forgot the influence that Farfrae had on people, however infit of anger he dismissed him as his manager. Henchard could have tried to see the good that Farfrae brought to the corn business, in that way he could have been successful. Henchard was also fighting against fate, he did not realize that Farfrae was greater than he, which made it inevitable to fight his misfortunes. Henchard also dependent on old ways of establishing a business, he went to Mr fall a weather prophet who misled and this resulted in him becoming bankrupt and incur huge losses and end up selling his properties to pay his creditors. In contrary Farfrae depended on science and new methods of financing a business. Farfrae also didn't want to destroy Hechard a man who showed him great hospitality when he first came to Casterbridge. He tries by all means not to take Hechard's customers. Despite that Henchard was now treating Farfrae in a bad way, Farfrae remained trustworthy, if he had wanted to destroy Mr. Hechard he could have told the whole city's about Henchard shameful deeds of the past. Henchard's ignorance and stubbornness are also what led to his downfall, he always remained captive of his evil deeds. He didn't even use his power to stop Mr's Good Enough the furmity seller when he saw that the woman was going to expose her, instead he admitted in front of the crowd that indeed he had sold Susan for five guineas. This made lose the support of many people and it was now clear that he was not going to be a mayor on the next voting. Henchard also kept the secret to himself that Elizabeth Jane was not his daughter if he had mustered the courage to tell her that he had found that Newson, the sailor was his father maybe Susan could have decided to stay with him and serve him from dying. Also on another hand, if Herchad had obeyed the instruction on the letter that that was written by Elizabeth Jane before death "not to be opened till Elizabeth's wedding" maybe Henchard could have lived happily with Elizabeth's Jane and at least have a little family. Henchard also delayed visiting Lucceta, If he had managed to get to Lucceta's house on time then Farfrae might no have had a chance to fall in love with Lucetta. As a result, Hechar'd have had financial support from Lucceta even when he became bankrupt.
However to a lesser extent maybe it might be valid to say that Farfrae contributed to Henchard's downfall. This is because Farfrae became Hechard's rival as a result people started to prefer Farfrae rather than Henchard. If Farfrae didn't come to Casterbridge maybe Henchard could have continued to prosper since they would have been no rival. Farfrae impressed the people of Casterbridge on the first day in Casterbridge when he sang native songs about his homestead. It is also said that people wished Farfrae was the master rather than Henchard. Hence it is clear that the arrival of Farfrae caused was now leading to the decline of the liking that people had on Henchard. Farfrae also took over Lucetta a g girl who Hechard wanted to marry after Susan passed away. Since Lucetta was now richer by inheritance, this acted as an advantage for Farfrae in boosting his Business and as a disadvantage for Hechard as he could not get anything from Lucetta. Far also in the end took over Hechad's businesses and house. As if that wasn't enough he then became the mayor of Casterbridge which meant that Henchard lost his position as the mayor.
From the above evidence, it is clear that Farfrae Lessley contributed to Michael Henchard's downfall.
